Physical Geography of Ukraine


1. Natural resources

  • What resources are available?
Ukraine has many natural resources. Some of the resources are coal, iron, granite, marble, chalk, marl, sandstone nickel and uranium.

  • How are these resources being used?
Uranium is used in nuclear power plants. Granite, marble, chalk, marl, sandstone are used for buildings. Coal is used as fossil fuel. Finally iron is used for mineral work, iron content, and industrial wealth.

  • What is being done to preserve these resources?
There isn't much being done to preserve Ukraine's resources.

2. Climate

  • What is the average monthly temperature? Precipitation?
The average monthly temperature in the warmest month is about 16 degrees Celsius and the coldest month is lower than -3 degrees Celsius and four or more months is about 15 degrees Celsius.

  • What is the record high? Low?
The highest temperature was 41.3 degrees Celsius and the lowest was -35 degrees Celsius. The highest precipitation was 600 millimeters and the lowest was 400 millimeters.

  • What season is the warmest? Coldest?
The coldest season in Ukraine is winter and the warmest is summer.
3. Plants and Animals
  • What animals/plants are most common there?
There are many plants, but some plants are oak, birch, maple, pine, alder, and willow trees. Some common animals are wolves, foxes, wildcats, and many more.

  • Are any animals/plants endangered? Protected?

There are many animals that are endangered such as the Alpine shrew. There are national parks that are protected and preserved.

  • Do the animals/plants have any economic value?
The plants and animals do have economic value. They hope to develop ecotourism using the national parks.

4. Landforms


  • What is the most common land form there?
The most common land form in Ukraine is mountains and hills.
  • How was it formed?
Mountains and hills were formed from volcanoes and from tectonic forces.
  • Are any of them tourist locations? National parks?
There are plenty of national parks such as the Karpatskyi Biosphere Reserve and the Yalta Mountain Forest Reserve that are in Ukraine.

5. Bodies of Water

  • What is the largest body of water? How deep/long is it?
The Dnieper River is the largest river in Ukraine. It's total length is 2285 km. The average depth of the river is 8 meters. It is the third largest river in Europe.

  • Why is this body of water important to the country?
The Dnieper is very important for transportations. It also supplies more than 50 percent of the Ukraine's need of fresh water. The river has a hydro-electric power plant called the Dnieper Hydro-electric Station.

  • What problems is the water supply facing here?
The oxygen levels of the water are decreasing, because of the hydro-electric power plant. The fish cannot go up the river for migration and will die.

  • What economic value does the water have/bring to the country?
The water in the river is used as drinking water, which are bought from the people in Ukraine.
